Waipahu Neighborhood Guide

Waipahu was historically known for sugarcane plantation operations and now serves as a census-designated place (CDP) located within Ewa District on Oahu Island in Hawaii State, United States. As such, this diverse and dynamic community has preserved its historical charms and modern advancements. Waipahu is an eclectic hub, home to eateries and shops that showcase its multicultural identity, along with annual events that honor its rich cultural fabric. Waipahu is located inland and boasts a tropical climate. History of Waipahu

Waipahu holds an integral place in Hawaii’s economic and cultural history. The word ‘Waipahu’ derives from an artesian spring which literally means “gushing water,” representing natural springs used as irrigation during the early agricultural history of this area. Waipahu’s history is closely intertwined with that of sugar production: Oahu Sugar Company established a sugarcane plantation here in 1897. Plantation’s work became one of the main employers, drawing laborers from Japan, China, the Philippines, and Portugal – creating a multicultural community and setting the groundwork for Waipahu’s diverse population. In 1995, Hawaii Plantation Village opened as a living history museum to showcase plantation life and tell the stories of workers at Waipahu’s sugarcane farms. Since then, Waipahu has flourished into an ever-evolving residential and commercial hub while still holding tightly onto its heritage roots and cultural identity.
