Waiʻanae, one of Hawaii’s main islands, is famed for its stunning natural beauty. Bounded by lush mountain ranges and bordering crystal-clear ocean waters, Waiʻanae boasts the greatest of all Hawaii’s attractions. Makaha Beach is one of the more well-known in Waiʻanae for surfing. In contrast to Honolulu’s bustle and frenzy, Waiʻanae offers a more relaxing atmosphere with strong sense of community spirit. Waiʻanae is home to an abundance of culture and tradition, and residents regularly engage in traditional Hawaiian activities like hula dancing, ukulele playing, lei-making and more. Though predominantly residential, Waiʻanae offers essential amenities and facilities and boasts close-knit community ties tied into Hawaiian culture.

    History of Waiʻanae

Waiʻanae has been home for centuries, first by native Polynesians crossing the Pacific to settle on Hawaiian islands. Waiʻanae in Hawaiian roughly translates to “water of the mullet,” reflecting its historical abundance of fishing resources. The fertile land and availability of fresh water made Waiʻanae an ideal location for early Hawaiian settlers engaging in agriculture and fishing activities. Waiʻanae was heavily engaged in Hawaii’s sugarcane industry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, serving as one of the main drivers of its economy for many decades. Waiʻanae Sugar Mill was an important employer in this region. Post World War II, Waiʻanae became increasingly residential and slowly transformed into the community it is today. Hawaiian culture and tradition remain deeply appreciated here; history plays an integral role in Waiʻanae’s identity as an island community.
