Nānākuli has deep ties to Hawaiian culture. Prior to European contact, the Waianae Coast area around Nānākuli and Nānākuli was home to native Hawaiians who subsisted off both land and sea through fishing, farming, and navigation skills. However, after Western influence entered Nānākuli during the 19th and early 20th centuries, modernization began altering Nānākuli and surrounding areas. As tourism expanded throughout Hawaii throughout the 20th century, Waianae Coast remained relatively isolated from other areas on Oahu compared to others, helping it preserve some of its cultural traditions. Nānākuli remains a community that honors both its Native roots while adapting to modern life – it remains an invaluable representation of Hawaii’s long and rich cultural history.Places to Visit near Nānākuli:
