History of Lanikai Beach

Lanikai Beach has long been part of Hawaii’s rich and colorful past, its name meaning “heavenly sea” in Hawaiian, evoking the natural beauty of this stretch of shoreline. Prior to Westerners arriving, this area formed part of Kailua ahupua’a (land division), serving Native Hawaiians for fishing and salt production. Lanikai Beach dates back to the early 1900s when land owned by Bishop Estate was mostly left unused and used for cattle grazing. Charles Frazier purchased this same parcel of land in 1920 and began developing it into residential neighborhoods. Frazier had a vision of Lanikai as an exclusive, high-end community and sought wealthy buyers from mainland United States. The first homes were constructed during the late 1920s and early 1930s – many featuring styles known as Mediterranean Hawaiian architecture. Lanikai Beach remained open to the public despite Frazier’s intentions, quickly becoming a favorite spot among both locals and visitors. Lanikai Beach became even more well-known during the 1950s and 60s due to the increasing popularity of surfing and other water sports. Today, Lanikai Beach is widely considered to be one of the world’s most breathtaking beaches, drawing tourists from all corners of the globe. Though changes have taken place over time in its surrounding neighborhood, Lanikai remains an accessible point and popular location for sunbathing, swimming and water sports activities enthusiasts.

Things to do in Lanikai Beach

Visit Lanikai Beach:

At the heart of Lanikai is its popular beach – Lanikai. Famed for its crystal-clear waters and powdery white sand, Lanikai provides the ideal setting to unwind, sunbathe, swim or picnic in paradise.

Kayaking to the Mokulua Islands:

Kayakers can paddle to two small islands off of Hawaii known as Mokulua or “Mokes,” popular destinations for kayakers. Moku Nui has an island beach where kayakers can land. Please remember that these are bird sanctuaries so please leave no trace and respect the wildlife and leave no footprints behind!

Hike the Lanikai Pillbox Trail:

This relatively short hike provides breathtaking views of Lanikai, Mokulua Islands, and their surroundings. The “pillboxes” are old military observation posts from World War II; the trail leading up to them is one of Oahu’s most beloved hikes.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP):

Lanikai Beach’s calm waters make them the ideal spot for stand-up paddleboarding, while nearby Kailua offers various rental boards.

Snorkeling:

Lanikai Beach’s clear waters and coral reefs make an excellent setting for snorkeling, giving you the chance to witness tropical fish, sea turtles, and other forms of marine life.
