Kapolei’s history is relatively recent compared to other areas on Oahu. Prior to the 1980s, the area where Kapolei now stands was mostly made up of sugarcane and pineapple fields. The concept of developing Kapolei as an “Oahu Second City” to help alleviate Honolulu congestion first emerged during this era. The vision for Kapolei was to offer a counterbalance to Honolulu, residents’ employment opportunities, housing options, and amenities without long commute times. Kapolei takes its name from Pu’u o Kapolei, with “Kapo lei” meaning “beloved Kapo” in Hawaiian mythology. Development began during the late 1980s and 90s.
