Kapolei, located on Oahu island, has become known as Hawaii’s “Second City” after Honolulu. Kapolei’s History

Kapolei’s history is relatively recent compared to other areas on Oahu. Prior to the 1980s, the area where Kapolei now stands was mostly made up of sugarcane and pineapple fields. The concept of developing Kapolei as an “Oahu Second City” to help alleviate Honolulu congestion first emerged during this era. The vision for Kapolei was to offer a counterbalance to Honolulu, residents’ employment opportunities, housing options, and amenities without long commute times. Kapolei takes its name from Pu’u o Kapolei, with “Kapo lei” meaning “beloved Kapo” in Hawaiian mythology. Development began during the late 1980s and 90s. Today, Kapolei stands as an exemplar of successful urban planning, continuing its evolution as an exciting city that offers both commercial prosperity and community living opportunities.
