Kailua is an idyllic coastal town located on Oahu, Hawaii, famous for its stunning natural beauty and famous for hosting one of the most breathtaking beaches worldwide: Kailua Beach is known for its soft white sand and turquoise waters, making this destination one of the top travel destinations worldwide. Additionally, this town provides plenty of vibrant activities ranging from kayaking around Mokulua Islands or Lanikai Pillbox Trail to simply taking in breathtaking scenery – there is something here for every outdoor enthusiast in Kailua! Furthermore, this coastal town also hosts numerous historical sites and cultural events that showcase Hawaiian history as well as the unique traditions of Hawaiian cultures around Oahu.

Kailua’s History

Kailua’s history is closely interwoven with that of Hawaii itself. First settled by Polynesians who arrived around 500 AD, Kailua became an integral part of ancient Hawaiian culture due to its fertile lands and abundant fishing grounds. Kailua was home to Oahu’s chiefs’ residence and was seen as an important place of political power. But the sugar industry transformed Kailua during the 19th century, creating new economic activity while forcing out many native Hawaiians. Kailua developed as a residential area during the 20th century, particularly following World War II when servicemen stationed on Hawaii decided to make Kailua their home. Today, this community continues to evolve while maintaining its rich past and maintaining its distinctive characteristics.  

Things to do in Kailua

Kailua Beach Park:

Kailua Beach Park is one of the world’s most stunning beaches, boasting clear turquoise waters and powdery white sand. Ideal for swimming, sunbathing, picnicking or simply taking in its breathtaking view – Kailua’s calm waters also make this an excellent place for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding!

Lanikai Pillbox Hike:

This relatively short hike provides beautiful panoramic views of Mokulua Islands and Lanikai beach from two old military bunkers known as pillboxes – hence its name!

Kayaking to the Mokulua Islands:

Rent a kayak and head out towards these twin islands off Lanikai Beach. One, Moku Nui, features a seabird sanctuary as well as an idyllic sandy beach perfect for exploring.

Kailua Farmers’ Market:

Every Thursday evening, this farmers’ market provides an ideal opportunity to sample fresh local produce, indulge in delectable prepared food items, and find unique handmade crafts.
