    History of Waialae-Kahala

Waialae, which means “mud hen water,” is a bird with short wings and long legs that inhabits swamps or marshes. In the 1800s, Kahala became the primary location for cattle and pig farms due to its flat land. The name itself derives from Hawaiian words meaning “beach” or “shoreline,” as its stunning beaches have been popular with both locals and tourists for centuries. Later in the 19th century, wealthy plantation owners built grand estates surrounded by acres of lush gardens and fruit orchards which served as retreats for both their owners as well as their families.
