    History of Hawaii Kai

Hawaii Kai is a residential area located on Oahu in Hawaii, United States, developed during the 1960s with one of the largest privately funded residential developments ever undertaken on that island. Hawaii was officially admitted as the 50th state of the United States on August 21, 1959, and with it came an urgent need for housing developments to accommodate its growing population. Henry J. Kaiser was an established industrialist and builder who saw an opportunity to create a community on Oahu Island. Francis O. Frazier also saw potential in this venture and helped organize development efforts on Oahu island. Kaiser and Frazier began developing Hawaii Kai in 1961, when it was initially comprised of vast tracts of wetlands and agricultural land. Kaiser and Frazier’s project involved draining and filling in these wetlands in order to construct a marina, residential neighborhoods, and further industrial uses for its land. Hawaii Kai is best known for its Marina, completed in 1963 and home to over 700 boats and popular for recreational boating and fishing. Hawaii Kai also features several shopping centers, parks, schools, and other amenities. Hawaii Kai was established with its inaugural residential neighborhood, Koko Head Terrace, completed in 1962. Since then, however, more developments such as Mariners Ridge, Queens Gate, and Portlock have come into being. Many Hawaii Kai homes provide stunning ocean or mountain views, making the area famous for outdoor recreational opportunities such as hiking, swimming, and surfing. Over the years, Hawaii Kai has steadily developed and thrived. Home to over 30,000 residents today and one of Oahu’s most desirable residential areas, Hawaii Kai remains an extremely popular and vibrant community in Hawaii despite any concerns related to environmental or development impacts.
