Āina Haina
Aina Haina neighborhood guide
Aina Haina’s location makes it one of the most sought-after neighborhoods on O’ahu. Nestled between Waialae Iki Ridge and Hawaii Loa Ridge, Aina Haina lies 6 miles east of Waikiki and takes only 15 minutes to drive into downtown. Aina Haina is a residential neighborhood located on the eastern portion of Honolulu, Hawaii’s Oahu island. The name itself translates to “Hind’s Land,” and it was once known as Wailupe – which ancient Hawaiians used as a fishing village. Nowadays, fishermen still try their luck fishing here amongst shallow waters; however, you’ll often also spot surfers, windsurfers, and stand-up paddlers out surfing or windsurfing! Nowadays, Aina Haina remains quiet, with some homes owned by 2nd or 3rd generation families living here; newly constructed homes usually result from demolishing older properties though some original homes may still exist, so buyers have opportunities for building “sweat equity” if desired. Nowadays, Wailupe sits atop a small peninsula along the ocean with direct access to it and many homes situated along its shores. In the early 1900s, Aina Haina was an agricultural plantation, and many of its houses were designed specifically for workers employed on the plantation. After World War II, however, veterans returned from overseas and began building homes there in droves. Nowadays, Aina Haina mainly consists of residential neighborhoods with many single-family homes as well as some condominiums. It is renowned for its stunning ocean and mountain views as well as its tranquil, suburban atmosphere. Recently, Aina Haina has seen significant development, such as the construction of a new shopping center and renovation to the Aina Haina Shopping Center with supermarkets, restaurants and other stores. Despite these changes, the area still retains its residential character and appeals to families and retirees alike.Aina Haina Homes for sale statistics(2023):
