    Neighborhood Guide of Aiea

Aiea is a vibrant community with a long and rich history and diverse population. The local culture and sense of pride stemming from its past life as a former sugar plantation town, while over time, its transformation into an ideal blend of residential areas, commercial centers, and natural beauty has made it one of the island’s premier living experiences.

    History of Aiea

The origins of Aiea date back to ancient Hawaiian history when it was an abundant, fertile area inhabited by Native Hawaiians. The name itself comes from an old Hawaiian phrase meaning “burnt ‘ie’ie,” referring to a native shrub that once flourished abundantly here. At the turn of the 19th century, ‘Aiea experienced a significant transformation with the arrival of European and American settlers. The sugar industry played an integral part in its development; by 1870, the Campbell family-led ‘Aiea Sugar Plantation was established by their Company; immigrant labor from China, Japan, and the Philippines was brought in to work the plantations fields. Sugar industry workers settled in ‘Aiea to support its sugar plantations, creating a vibrant community. Attracted by thriving industries like sugar production, plantation workers established residences. They began raising families within this diverse and vibrant town – creating the vibrant hub known as Mill Town with residential areas, schools, churches, and businesses supporting it all. ‘Aiea was an important community during World War II due to its proximity to Pearl Harbor. On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, leaving many buildings and structures damaged or destroyed, creating significant challenges in ‘Aiea for years afterward. Postwar Aiea experienced an unprecedented period of renewal and growth. Sugar plantations eventually closed, and the land was repurposed for residential and commercial development; Pearlridge Center became Hawaii’s largest shopping mall during this period, providing additional amenities and opportunities for growth.
