History of Diamond Head

Diamond Head is a volcanic mountain located on the southeast shoreline of Oahu Island in Hawaii. The crater formed around 300,000 years ago when lava erupted from an ocean floor vent and hardened, creating what now stands as a cone-shaped volcano rising above the waves. Over time, volcanic activity continued, and the cone in question grew larger and larger. Eventually, an eruption caused its sides to collapse, creating Diamond Head Crater – now 3,520 feet across and 760 feet deep – becoming one of Oahu Island’s most iconic landmarks. Diamond Head got its name during the 19th century when British sailors thought they had discovered diamonds in the rocks at the base of a crater. However, these “diamonds” were reflective calcite crystals commonly found within volcanic rocks. In the late 1800s, the Hawaiian government recognized the strategic value of Diamond Head and built a military installation on its summit. During World War II, however, US forces deployed gun batteries and observation posts on Diamond Head as part of an integrated coastal defense system designed to defend Honolulu against potential enemy attacks.

Diamond Head activities

Hike Diamond Head Crater:

One of the most popular activities in Diamond Head is hiking to the top of the crater. This trail is 1.6 miles roundtrip and takes 1-2 hours to complete; though it is filled with stairs and strenuous, you will be rewarded with stunning views at the summit!

Visit Diamond Head State Monument:

The Diamond Head State Monument is a 475-acre park surrounding the Diamond Head Crater. Here, visitors can enjoy hiking trails, picnic areas, and an informative visitor center featuring displays on the region’s natural and cultural history.

Relax on Diamond Head Beach:

Diamond Head Beach is a small, secluded beach ideal for taking in the sun. Its rocky cliffs provide breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.

Explore Kapiolani Park:

Kapiolani Park is a 170-acre park situated at the base of Diamond Head. It boasts numerous attractions like Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, Waikiki Shell outdoor concert venue, and Diamond Head Tennis Center.
