    History of Pearl City

Pearl City’s development and significance were closely interwoven with that of Pearl Harbor, playing an instrumental role in shaping its character and history. Here is an overview of this township’s long history: Early Settlement: Initially, the area that would become Pearl City was settled by Native Hawaiians who farmed taro, sweet potatoes, and other crops on its fertile lands surrounding Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor: By the late 19th century, the Hawaiian monarchy recognized Pearl Harbor’s strategic value and designated it as a naval base. Providing protection to anchorages in its anchorage areas as well as access to the Pacific Ocean through protected anchorages, in 1887, the United States secured exclusive use rights through the Reciprocity Treaty with the Kingdom of Hawaii. Development and Growth: Pearl Harbor’s establishment as a naval base ushered in a period of growth for surrounding communities. As military infrastructure expanded, workers settled down with their families in the area leading to the construction of housing and amenities in its vicinity. Pearl City Origins: Pearl City’s modern neighborhood began to form during the 1960s with a large-scale residential development project initiated to transform agricultural lands into suburban communities to accommodate Pearl Harbor’s ever-increasing military presence population. Planned Community: Pearl City was developed as a planned community, with an emphasis on housing, schools, and services for military personnel and their families. Shopping centers, parks, and other amenities were constructed as part of the development to support residents’ needs. Pearl City Continued to Evolve and Diversify: As years went by, Pearl City underwent continuous transformation and growth, becoming home to residents from diverse backgrounds, such as military personnel, local residents, and individuals working nearby urban centers. Over time it became a thriving residential community offering residential, commercial, and industrial spaces. Historical Significance: Pearl City’s close proximity to Pearl Harbor lends its historical significance. The attack by Japanese forces during World War II on December 7, 1941, had a lasting effect both locally and nationwide; many memorial sites, such as USS Arizona Memorial and Battleship Missouri Memorial, stand as reminders of this area’s past significance.
